Product description
True Wild Dandelion Seeds
Non-treated, Non-GMO, Heirloom Common Dandelion Seeds
Dandelion's bitter leaves and roots are completely edible and rich in vitamins and minerals. While “Italian” Dandelion or Chicory are more commonly used in salads and stir-fries, baby True Dandelion leaves work just as well. The lush yellow flowers can also be used to make homemade wines.
True Wild, or common, Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has long been unappreciated, it has benefits as a food source, herbal tea and is a pollinator favorite! Dandelion is widely understood as an invasive weed and spreads readily through its iconic puff ball seed heads we all use to send our wishes. However, its benefits far outweigh its propensity to reproduce. Its early flowering period makes it one of the earliest seasonal sources of pollen for beneficial insects.
Dandelions grow to form a round flat base and produce yellow flowers that turn into the whimsical puffy seed heads we are all familiar with. These typically grow to be between 6-18 inches tall. The Dandelion is a perennial plant that produces harvestable leaf material 40-50 days from seeding and ideal root material from 90 days onward. The plants are best started from seed in late winter or early spring, and require very little care. Dandelions can also be grown in pots, or indoors; if grown in containers they require a soil depth of around six inches.
We’ve maintained our own seed line for a better part of the last decade, and this has resulted in improved germination rates of the plant versus wildcrafted seed. This makes sourcing seed from our company an easy ethical choice.
All parts of this little plant are edible! You can enjoy the greens in salad or stir fry, and even add a couple yellow flowers on top as a garnish. The roots can be used raw or roasted to brew a tea that has been highly valued by many herbal medicine traditions to support liver health, digestion and more!
Dandelion is easy to grow, we all know how persistent it can be! Though it is often treated as an invasive plant, it is not as hard to control as you may think. Simply cut back yellow flowers prior to seeding - try to leave them in bloom long enough for our pollinator friends to get their share!
It is also good to be mindful of where you are planting your dandelions. They can grow in most conditions, and if dandelions have the room and are allowed to spread - they will! If dandelions are planted in containers or surrounded by dense grass or other foliage they are less likely to do so.
The leaves of the plant have a slightly bitter taste and work to add an extra bite or tanginess when used in place of other greens. They are delicious cooked or raw! One of our favorite recipes is dandelion pesto, it’s so simple, fresh and super tasty!
Our True Wild Dandelions are a joy to grow! Experiment with this versatile flower and enjoy the many benefits this plant has to offer.
