Experience the Joy of Gardening

Why Sustainable Seed Company?

Painted Mountain Corn is an all-American crop boasting impressive tolerance to drought, cold, and altitude. Developed in Montana during the 1970's by horticulturalist Dave Christiensen, Painted Mountain was sampled and bred from over 70 varieties of corn to thrive in the demanding Montana conditions. This colorful and nutritious variety is an ideal decorative crop for either indoors or out and can ground into a bright, hearty flour for muffins, johnny cakes, and tortilla chips.

Share the tradition and responsibility of sustainable gardening with future generations. We believe gardening is more than just nurturing plants, but it is about nurturing ourselves, family, and community.

John Fendley (“Farmer John”) founded Sustainable Seed Company in 2008 due to his concern that many varieties of fruits and vegetables he remembered from childhood were no longer propagated. John followed his dream and set out to protect and share rare heirloom seeds with the world and, ever since, has been a prominent distributor of exclusive, unique varieties of seeds including fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
